See what’s on the table

Bilbao reinvented itself around the Guggenheim Museum, but its heart is still the Casco Viejo, the old town of seven narrow streets beside the river. The arcaded Plaza Nueva fills every evening with locals moving between bars for pintxos and a drink.

The city’s markets and old-school counters keep the Basque classics alive: salt cod in every form, anchovies from the Cantabrian coast, peppers, and pastries from family bakeries. Txakoli vineyards and fishing villages are a short drive away.

It is the natural starting point for a journey through the Basque Country: big enough for great dining, small enough to explore on foot.

Insider tip from Richard

Do the pintxos crawl in the old town on a weekday evening. Same food, half the crowd.
