Romania
Castles, mountain villages and a generous table.
Romania offers medieval Transylvanian towns, Carpathian villages and a home-style cuisine built on slow cooking, smoked meats and hospitality.

Romania’s cooking is rooted in the countryside, where families still preserve, smoke and ferment through the seasons. Cabbage rolls simmer for hours, sour soups are brightened with fermented bran, and polenta, called mămăligă, is served with cheese and sour cream.
In Transylvania, Saxon villages and medieval towns like Sibiu and Brașov sit beneath the Carpathian Mountains, with sheep farms and wild forests all around. The country also has a long wine history, with native grapes such as Fetească Neagră.
Guests are always offered something: a glass of plum brandy, a slice of sweet bread, and a seat at the table.
Say yes when someone offers you something homemade, especially the plum brandy. Just pace yourself.
Say it like a local.
A few words of Romanian go a long way at the table in Romania.
- Bună ziua Say it: BOO-nuh ZEE-wah good day
- Mulțumesc Say it: mool-tsoo-MESK thank you
- Noroc! Say it: noh-ROK cheers
- Poftă bună Say it: POF-tuh BOO-nuh enjoy your meal
