Montenegro
Mountains that fall into the sea.
Montenegro’s dramatic Bay of Kotor, mountain villages and lakeside vineyards make it one of the Adriatic’s most striking and least crowded corners.

Montenegro is small, but its landscape changes quickly, from the fjord-like Bay of Kotor to limestone mountains and the wide waters of Lake Skadar. Its kitchens follow suit: seafood on the coast, cured meats and cheese in the mountains, and freshwater fish from the lake.
In the village of Njeguši, above Kotor, smoked ham and cheese are still made in the traditional way. Around Lake Skadar, family wineries produce Vranac, the country’s signature red.
It is a place for slow travel: a long lunch on a waterfront terrace, a winding mountain road, and a glass of local wine at sunset.
Drive up into the hills above the bay for ham, cheese and a glass of local red. The view comes free.
Say it like a local.
A few words of Montenegrin go a long way at the table in Montenegro.
- Dobar dan Say it: DOH-bar dahn good day
- Hvala Say it: HVAH-lah thank you
- Živeli! Say it: ZHEE-veh-lee cheers
- Prijatno Say it: PREE-yaht-no enjoy your meal
