Croatia’s coast reads like a map of small pleasures: walled cities, island harbors, oyster beds and pine-shaded coves. Along the Dalmatian coast, fish goes straight from the boat to the grill, and meat and vegetables are slow-cooked under an iron bell in the embers, a method called peka.
In the north, Istria is a different world of hilltop towns, olive groves and oak forests famous for truffles, with crisp Malvazija wines to match. Inland, the cooking turns heartier, with roasted meats, stews and homemade pasta.
What ties it together is a culture of small producers: family wineries, olive oil makers, cheesemakers and fishermen who are happy to share their table with visitors.
