Spain’s great red wine country.
Along the Ebro River, Rioja’s vineyards roll between medieval villages and the Sierra de Cantabria. Tempranillo is the star grape, and the region’s long tradition of aging wine in oak gives its reds their warmth and depth.
Haro, in Rioja Alta, is home to some of the oldest and most respected wineries in Spain, many with cellars and cooperages that have barely changed in a century. Across the region, modern architecture and traditional bodegas sit side by side.
The food is built to match the wine: hearty, rustic and generous, from potatoes stewed with chorizo to lamb grilled over vine shoots and asadors cooking over open fire.
Visit at least one small family bodega. The big names are great, but the family ones pour with stories.
A few words of Spanish go a long way at the table in Rioja.
